The Asali Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving people's lives with diabetes and raising awareness about the condition. We also aim to educate communities on properly caring for those with diabetes. Our top priority is to create a better world for everyone by taking proactive measures to prevent diabetes. We believe that sharing knowledge can save lives, and we encourage a safe and positive environment for those affected by diabetes. Our ultimate goal is to invest in sustainable health for all. The foundation is headquartered in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo.
In 2023, a new chapter in diabetes care began to unfold in the heart of Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. The Asali Foundation was born out of a vision to address the urgent and growing need for diabetes literacy and support in a region where awareness and resources are scarce.
Our name, “Asali,” meaning “honey” in Swahili, symbolizes the sweetness of life and the foundation's commitment to improving lives by battling the bitter challenges of diabetes. This name also pays homage to the condition's full name, “Diabetes Mellitus,” where “Mellitus” means “Honey Sweet” due to the high sugar levels in the urine and blood of diabetic patients, a characteristic first observed in ancient times.
With diabetes rates rising globally and affecting more individuals in the DRC, there was a critical need for a comprehensive approach to diabetes care and education. The foundation sought to fill this gap by offering programs and services tailored to the community's unique needs.
From its establishment, the Asali Foundation recognized that effective diabetes care extends beyond medical treatment. Our initial focus was on diabetes literacy—educating individuals and families about diabetes management, prevention, and the importance of regular check-ups. We understood that knowledge is power, and by equipping people with the correct information, we could empower them to make informed health choices.
In addition to education, we launched several key programs to support individuals and families facing the challenges of diabetes:
We aimed to increase understanding of diabetes, its risks, and its management through community outreach and educational workshops. Our campaigns were designed to reach people of all ages, including schools, workplaces, and community centers.
Recognizing the barriers to accessing necessary medications and supplies, we established a program to provide essential diabetes medications and supplies to those in need. This program ensures that individuals cannot choose between crucial healthcare and other necessities.
Many families face financial hardships that can impede their ability to manage diabetes effectively. We offer financial assistance for diabetes-related expenses and provide social support to help individuals navigate the challenges of living with diabetes.
Regular screenings and preventative care are crucial for managing diabetes and preventing complications. The Asali Foundation offers free A1C screenings and other diagnostic services to help individuals monitor their condition and receive timely care.
Living with diabetes can be isolating in a country where stigmas are still prevalent. Our support groups offer a platform for people to connect, share experiences, and support each other. These groups help to build a sense of community and provide emotional and practical support.
The Asali Foundation has made significant advancements in enhancing diabetes care and education in Kinshasa and its environs since its inception. Our initiatives have positively impacted numerous individuals and families, equipping them with the necessary resources and assistance to effectively manage their diabetes and lead healthier lives. As a burgeoning organization, we eagerly embrace any form of support or opportunity that will aid us in our expansion.
The foundation's work has not only impacted those directly receiving assistance but has also contributed to a broader awareness of diabetes within the community. By addressing the root causes of diabetes-related challenges and advocating for better care and resources, the Asali Foundation continues to be a beacon of hope for many.
As we look to the future, the Asali Foundation remains committed to expanding our reach and enhancing our programs. We aim to continue raising awareness, improving access to care, and advocating for the needs of those affected by diabetes. Through our ongoing efforts, we hope to create a world where diabetes is no longer a barrier to living a full and healthy life.
The Asali Foundation's journey is a testament to the power of community, education, and compassion. Together, we are building a future where every individual has the knowledge, resources, and support they need to overcome the challenges of diabetes and thrive.
